Groups Disagree On Amendment 46

Plan Being Called Civil Rights Initiative

The Colorado Civil Rights Initiative would prohibit the state from granting preferential treatment to anyone on the basis of race, sex or ethnicity in hiring, education and contracts, but the plan has mixed support. The wording on the initiative can be confusing for many people.

Melissa Hart from CO For Equal Rights said, "It refers to itself as an initiative on prohibition on discrimination. You read that and say, "Oh yes I don't like discrimination.' But that's not what it's trying to do."

But those behind what's being called the Colorado Civil Rights Initiative said the language is loud and clear.

Jessica Peck Corry from Vote YES Amendment 46 said, "The government has discriminated on the basis of race for far too long. And the time has come to treat us all equally."

The Colorado Blue Book states Amendment 46 prohibits the government from discriminating against or granting preferential treatment to anyone or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, or public contracting.

Supporters want to remove the distraction of race and begin to see each other as individuals.

Opponents to Amendment 46 believe passing this initiative would eliminate programs like summer camps for girls who like math and science that are funded through public education.

Proponents believe the opposite, that it would open up more programs -- not take them away.
