Round 1 | Round 2 | Sweet 16 | Elite Eight | Final Four

The remaining teams were back in action on Sunday for the conclusion of the second round.

Saturday's second-round contests saw Duke avoiding a near upset and Gonzaga using a last-second shot to hold off Western Kentucky.

Midwest Region

The Midwest region was slated for a full day of competition Sunday, with four games scheduled.

Sunday's first game featured No. 11 Dayton against No. 3 Kansas. The Jayhawks, last year's champions, kept their hopes alive for a second-straight title with a 60-43 win over Dayton to advance to the Sweet 16. Dayton stayed within reach of Kansas in the first half, trailing by six at the intermission, but then the Jayhawks pulled away in the second period.

The Midwest's second game Sunday featured two unlikely second-round teams, No. 13 Cleveland State and No. 12 Arizona. Cleveland State, which recorded the biggest upset of the first round when it defeated No. 4 Wake Forest on Friday, had its tournament-run end when it was defeated 71-57 by Arizona.

Later, No. 10 USC gave No. 2 Michigan State all it could handle. The Spartans held a three-point lead at the half, but the Trojans didn't let the slim deficit silence them in the second period. USC pestered Michigan State for most of the second half until the Spartans finally pulled away in the game's final minutes to earn a 74-69 victory.

The Midwest region's final game was between No. 9 Siena and No. 1 Louisville. Siena, which trailed by seven at the half, had the Cardinals on the ropes in the second period. The No. 9 seed flirted with an upset of the tournament's overall No. 1 seed before Louisville pulled it together in the game's final minutes to post a 79-72 victory.

West Region

Just one game was played in the West region Sunday, when No. 6 Marquette took on No. 3 Missouri. The Tigers held a comfortable lead early in the game, taking an 11-point advantage into halftime. But then Marquette came back and outscored Missouri 44-37 in the second period to turn the game into a nail-biter. The Tigers pulled away in the final seconds to clinch the 83-79 victory.

The region's other contests were all completed Saturday.

Action in the West region tipped off Saturday with No. 10 Maryland against No. 2 Memphis. Maryland, which upset No. 7 California in the first round, was denied a second upset by a strong showing from the Tigers. Memphis downed Maryland 89-70 to advance to the Sweet 16.

No. 1 Connecticut also made quick work of its second-round opponent, defeating No. 9 Texas A&M 92-66. The Huskies earned the victory with head coach Jim Calhoun back on the sidelines. Calhoun was hospitalized in order to undergo tests Thursday and missed UConn's opening-round game against Chattanooga.

Later, No. 5 Purdue withstood a second-half rally to defeat No. 4 Washington. The Boilermakers led by 11 at the half before Washington came back in the second period to turn the game into a nail-biter in the final seconds. But Purdue hung on to capture the 76-74 victory.

Second-round action continued in the East region on Sunday.

In the region's first game, No. 12 Wisconsin took on No. 4 Xavier. The Badgers looked like they were headed for the Sweet 16 through the first half and the start of the second, but then Xavier battled back. The No. 4 seed recorded a 60-49 victory to advance to the Sweet 16.

Later, No. 1 Pittsburgh survived a test from No. 8 Oklahoma State. The game was tied at the half, but Pitt seemed to be in control for most of the second period, until Oklahoma State charged back. OSU managed to tie the contest late in the game before Pitt pulled ahead for good to secure an 84-76 win and a Sweet 16 match against Xavier.

Saturday's second-round action in the East region began with a rout.

No. 3 Villanova didn't give No. 6 UCLA a chance to even think about pulling off an upset, posting a 13-point lead at the half. Villanova increased its advantage throughout the second period to record an 89-69 victory and advance to the Sweet 16.

In the day's final game, No. 7 Texas came up short in its bid against No. 2 Duke. The Blue Devils held a seven-point advantage at the half, but the Longhorns fought back in the second period. The teams traded the lead in the final minutes of the game before Duke clinched the 74-69 victory to advance to the Sweet 16.

On Saturday, No. 8 LSU took on No. 1 North Carolina. The Tar Heels, who trounced No. 16 Radford in the first round, eased through their second-round contest as well, downing LSU 84-70. The Tar Heels also welcomed standout point guard Ty Lawson back to the lineup. Lawson, who scored 23 points against the Tigers, missed the team's first-round game because of a lingering toe injury.

Later, No. 2 Oklahoma faced an early test from No. 10 Michigan. The Sooners led by just one point at the half before pulling away in the second period to secure a 78-67 victory.

The night's final game was a thriller. No. 12 Western Kentucky, which knocked off No. 5 Illinois in the first round, almost pulled an upset over No. 4 Gonzaga before falling 83-81. Western Kentucky led the game at the half and tied it up at 81-81 in the final seconds before Gonzaga ran down the court and scored before the final buzzer.
