DENVER -- Former managers of the Colorado Humane Society won't be allowed to open more shelters under an agreement with the state. The Colorado Humane Society came under fire in 2008 after a series of CALL7 Investigations.Investigator Tony Kovaleski found the Robert and Mary Warren using donations intended to benefit the animals for their own personal use, poor record-keeping including an expired registration to operate as a charity, and charging clients to euthanize and cremate their pets but instead throwing the dead animals into a dumpster.
Following the CALL7 Investigation the state sued the charity, saying it mismanaged funds and euthanized animals to make room for more adoptable pets. The settlement announced Wednesday settles the state's lawsuit. In a statement to 7NEWS, Attorney General John Suthers said, "The fact that the Colorado Humane Society is no longer in operation today is a testament to the mismanagement and poor choices of the organization's former management."The Warrens are barred from operating or managing charities for 10 years. They can't own an animal shelter for the next five years.Another employee, Stephanie L. Gardner, was barred from operating a charity for at least two years and barred from operating an animal shelter for one year.Calls to the Warren's attorney were not returned.
