DENVER -- When he's not working for you, Consumer Champ Bill Clarke is sometimes watching television infomercials. Sometimes they're good for a laugh and sometimes there may be something there. So, to which category does the Magic Bullet Blender informercial belong? In the infomercial, there's a frumpy lady, two young married couples, a guy with a hangover and a cheerful husband and wife all explaining the virtues of the Magic Bullet, Clarke said.
It's touted as the "the personal versatile countertop magician" because "it'll do any job in the kitchen in 10 seconds or less."The commercial says the Magic Bullet Blender will replace your food processor, blender, electric juicer and coffee grinder while occupying only the space of a coffee mug.Bill Clarke showed the infomercial to Chef Mick Rosacci, of Tony's Meats and Specialty Foods, then asked him to test the Magic Bullet's magic. No one likes chopping onions, but the Magic Bullet infomercial makes that job look easy. When Rosacci tested it, the Magic Bullet jammed a bit so he shook it and then pulsed it again. But that didn't help. The onions were practically pureed. The infomercial's salsa looked decent. But Clarke's and Rosacci's was an ugly, pureed mush with just one chunk of onion. The nacho sauce seen on TV with cheddar cheese and jalapeno pepper looked fabulous, but during this test, it was terrible. There was one chunk of jalapeno, one glob of cheese and there was also oil that spilled over.During our demonstration, the alfredo sauce also boiled over in the microwave and it resulted in a "chunky" style.Rosacci said the Magic Bullet doesn't live up to the promises seen in the infomercial."It's a blender," Rosacci said. And a small blender at that. It's good for one serving, maybe two at best. What it does best are milkshakes, smoothies and frozen drinks. It's $70 in stores but for $140, including shipping, you can buy two on the infomercial or the Internet. But save your money and buy a good, cheap blender, Clarke said.More Information:
