Many of us have upgraded to newer digital cameras for photos and videos. And each year technology continues to improve.

But, there's one burning question. How can we be sure our memories are saved for years to come?

One wrong click on our computer and our files could be lost forever.

We checked the Denver metro area and found photo professionals willing to share advice.

Jason Hayes has been a professional wedding and portrait photographer for more than 14 years. For each client, he takes up to 2,500 photos. All must be properly stored.

Garrett Rue runs the video lab at Mike's Camera in Boulder. Every day, he transfers a wide variety of old film and video into a digital format.

Here's a list of key recommendations from both experts.

  • Convert analog film, video and photos to a digital format.
  • Back up important images and videos to DVDs.
  • Store discs in different locations.
  • Store discs in protective cases to prevent scratches.
  • Only write on proper side of disc with a soft tip marker.
  • Consider using an external hard drive for additional photo storage.
  • Online photo storage is the future.

Consider sites like these for safe backup of images:
  • Lifepics
  • Shutterfly.com
  • Snapfish.com

For those of us confused about choosing a CD or a DVD, Hayes makes it quite clear.

"The only difference between a DVD and a CD is the amount of data each can hold. Typically, a DVD has more space," said Hayes.

    And, what about Blu-ray discs?

"Blu-ray discs simply hold more information. Compared to a DVD, the quality is no different and is based on the original quality of the photo or image," said Rue.
