Finding Reliable Home Improvement Services Can Be Risky

New Directory Guarantees Good Service

Spring is the time when most homeowners begin thinking about doing some work around the house. Finding a contractor to do the work can be risky.

Consumer Champ Bill Clarke's first rule of remodeling is never to deal with someone who just knocks on your door, period. The second rule is be very careful of businesses endorsed by some celebrity. They're getting paid with your money.

At Call 7 for Help, we probably get more complaints about remodelers and home maintenance businesses than any other category. Unless you're dealing with someone you know and trust, there aren't many options.

Heather Dines wanted someone to repaint the old wooden timbers in her home, then take on some other re-painting work.

"I was looking to open up the place with a new paint job," she said.

Two months ago she saw an orange directory of potential contractors in the Sunday newspaper. A startup company called Done Right is responsible for the directory.

Here's how the directory works. There are more than 90 categories of work listed, and each business is assigned a toll-free phone number to use for customers to call.

A Done Right spokesman said, "We check references, make sure there are no complaints with the Better Business Bureau. We make sure they have licenses."

Done Right makes its money as a commission on the work that gets done, gets it from the business and not the customer. Done Right says it will resolve disputes when necessary and offers a $500 guarantee on its contractors' work. "It means that if the homeowner's not happy with the work, we advocate. They can call us. We'll intervene with the contractor. Hopefully they'll come back and fix the problem, and if not, we offer the guarantee."

The work on Heather Dines' home was done by a painting business called Certa Pro. Dines says the company exceeded expectations. "They gave us the best estimate, did a really nice presentation for us when they came over to talk to us."
