DENVER -- A woman who found herself close to foreclosure was looking for help but instead stumbled into fraud.Debbie Grace responded to a brochure mailed to her by Foreclosure Assistance Solutions of Clearwater, Fla."This one said we'll help you save your house and that's what I was trying to do," she said. "They wanted $1,000."
The money seemed a reasonable amount to rescue her $170,000 mortgage so she paid them with her credit card. Then, she said, Foreclosure Assistance told her to stay out of the way. She said they told her not to call lawyers or the mortgage lenders and that they were going to do all the work."They were going talk to the mortgage company and talk to the lawyer ... but the girl couldn't tell me (what they would say.) She said we've got to get this paperwork filled out and then we can go from there," Grace said. But then they company never did anything and she eventually lost her house, Grace said.Since she paid by credit card, she protested to her bank. Foreclosure Assistance told the Better Business Bureau that it cheerfully refunded her money.Grace continues to get junk mail from a number of companies based in Florida offering to save her home once again.
