DENVER -- There's still time to sign up!If you are looking forward to springtime in the Rockies so that you can hit the trails in the high country, then you might be interested in a great opportunity. For the past several years, I've been associated with the Colorado Mountain Club as a member, an assistant instructor, and a guest lecturer in their Wilderness Trekking School.
Whether you are a veteran active-lifestyler or a novice, the organization's educational programs are amazingly thorough. The knowledge and skills you'll learn are priceless (especially when you need to count on what you've learned!).Beginning Tuesday, April 7, the Colorado Mountain Club will offer the Wilderness Trekking School. As a former student in the program, I can say firsthand that it is well worth your time. Here's the scoop: the course consists of five Tuesday evening lectures and five field trips to practice what you've learned in class. The instructors will teach you about clothing, food, equipment, map and compass, and survival skills. In May, I'm lecturing on Colorado’s mountain weather. You can sign up for the course online, in person, or on the phone. And again, the first class is Tuesday, April 7, in Golden.Go to our web site for general information or go to CMCschool.org for information about schools like the Wilderness Trekking School. If you are not familiar with the organization, the Colorado Mountain Club is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven group for singles, couples, families and children. Most club activities and programs, including hiking, biking, camping, skiing, snow shoeing, and fishing are absolutely free, and there are hundreds of these activities throughout the year. You can choose activities according to your skill and fitness levels since there are activities for beginners and even very advanced outdoors persons. It's not just for mountain climbers; it's for anyone who wishes to enjoy our wonderful Colorado outdoors. Plus, all activities are led by qualified volunteer leaders.
