Site Helps Carpoolers Find Each Other

ERideShare.com Sorts By ZIP Code, Times

More people may give carpooling a try as Hurricane Rita sends gas prices up again, Omaha television station KETV reported.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that only 10 percent of residents in places such as Omaha carpool. That leaves someone like Jason Castor driving 20 miles to work alone.

"I'd like to find somebody to carpool with. That'd be great," Castor said.

Castor turned to the Web site ERideShare.com. It helps people find drivers who share similar routes and driving times. The site lets drivers search by city or ZIP code -- and sorts by origin, destination and departure times.

The director of ERideShare.com said he's seen activity jump six times since the gas price hike caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Experienced carpoolers said it's important to find a convenient location to meet on the way to work. They like to keep a calendar so participants know which days they need to drive and to divide up parking or other miscellaneous expenses.

Castor said he is ready to compromise just as long as he can carpool.

"Maybe we could carpool once a week. We don't have to carpool every day," he said.

The ERideShare.com site's director said any information listed to find a carpooling mate is private and won't be sold.
