The Winter Games at Copper Mountain present a big moment for Special Olympics athletes around the state.

The games, which have been going strong for the last 27 years, take place on February 28 and our Denver7 Special Olympics reporters, Hanna Atkinson and Connor Long, found several reasons why you should check them out.

Stephanie Sweeney, Copper’s Communication’s Director, told Denver7 the games are a full day, across multiple venues, but mostly based on the west village on the mountain.

Cody Field is a snowboarder, and said he’s ready for the Winter Games, “I’d say it’s the best time I could ever have in my life.”

The coaches tell us it’s a big deal for them too.

"It’s a once a year thing where we all get together and the coaches, it’s just a great experience for us, " said Mark Field, an alpine skiing coach and father to a Colorado Special Olympian.

If you head up to Copper Mountain next weekend, you’ll be able to watch the events, the dance, the medals ceremony, and even fireworks.

You can see more of Hanna and Connor’s stories on Denver7 every Saturday morning. Next week they will be out at the Denver Zoo with Eric Kahnert and Lisa Hidalgo for the Polar Plunge. You can donate or join our Denver7 teams by visiting Eric or Lisa’s Facebook pages.
