DENVER -- Trees, shrubs and other landscaping can be severely damaged following wet spring storms. Members of the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado has these tips for homeowners to repair and restore their damaged trees:Before doing landscape restoration, make sure fallen limbs are not located near electricity or cable lines. Call Xcel immediately before doing any work and treat all wires as live. Also, call utility companies if you plan to use long stakes to upright trees that have fallen.Tree limbs torn or broken by the heavy snow need to be cut back properly and left open. Do not cover with tree paint or sealants. Remember that some trees will regrow better than others, so don’t be alarmed if they don’t respond at the same rate.
If trees became imbalanced after multiple limbs were broken or if damage requires a ladder or cherry picker to reach, a professional should be contacted to prune and rebalance the tree.Maple trees that were damaged ooze sap naturally this time of year and that is the appropriate response for the injury.Go ahead and deep-root water trees in April if there is another dry spell. Trees will need the continuous moisture.Trees that are regularly pruned and maintained incur less damage from heavy spring snowstorms.
