Don Champion joined 7NEWS in January 2009 as a reporter. He comes to Denver from Jackson, Miss. where he worked at WAPT-TV as weekend anchor and reporter.Prior to Jackson, Don worked as weekend anchor at KSNT-TV in Topeka, Kan. and at WBAL-TV in Baltimore as a producer.
In 2008, Don was awarded an Associated Press award for his non-stop coverage of Hurricane Gustav along the Gulf Coast. While in Jackson he also helped cover the historic recovery effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and heavily covered city politics.In 2010, he was awarded a Heartland Emmy Award for Best Producer of 7News Now.A Washington, D.C. native, Don spent part of his childhood growing up in Germany. While attending Towson University in Baltimore, he worked at Black Entertainment Television as on-air talent for the award-winning talk show Teen Summit.Community involvement is important to Don. He spends much of his time mentoring the next generation of journalists and volunteering with community groups. Here in Denver, he sits on committees with The Denver Foundation and the Urban League Young Professionals. Don is also a proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
