Kids can achieve great things if they're shown the way. That's the idea behind the "I Have A Dream Foundation."

Kristen Solomon

"The 'I Have a Dream Foundation' is a school dropout prevention program," said Lori Canova, with the foundation.

The program starts when children are in the second grade and continues with mentoring and tutoring through high school and beyond.

"I get my homework done right when I get to the cafeteria," said fifth-grader Karina Rodriguez.

"My math is getting better everytime," said fifth-grader Juan Jacquez.

The Boulder County "I Have A Dream Foundation" has doubled its graduation rate thanks in large part to its volunteers, like Kristen Solomon.

"I lived in a world that was just right. Our family was fine, our finances were fine. Everything went really well for us," said Solomon. Then she lost her 7-year old son, Dakota, in an accident.

"Well, I go from no awareness whatsoever of people in our community, in Boulder County, who are extremely needy, to 'Hey, wait a second, there are a lot of people out there who are needy," Solomon said.

For the last few years she has volunteered countless hours to help underserved children -- kids who often remind her of her son.

"There are a couple little boys here at Pioneer that I go, 'Oh, he reminds me of Dakota. Or he has traits like Dakota,'" Solomon said.

The foundation's motto is "helping dreamers become achievers," and no one seems to be helping more than Solomon.
