Light rail is touted as a great way to cut down on pollution and traffic. But some people believe even more needs to be done to help the environment.

Three years ago, Jessica Sherwood started an education program she calls "Feet First."

"I was becoming increasingly frustrated by the number of people I saw running tiny little errands and getting in the cars for five minutes when they could walk just as easily," said Sherwood.

The stay-at-home mom volunteers to teach school children about the positive health, community, and environmental benefits of using alternative transportation. Last year, Sherwood spoke to 45 classrooms and reached more than 1,600 students. The youngsters seem to be getting the message.

"Use the light rail instead of our cars," said fourth-grader James Bostron. "Because it doesn't give out a lot of pollution," said fourth grader Candace Sorenson.

"They enjoy it. They talk about it a month after she leaves. They'll say, 'You know I rode my skate board to school. That lady who came and talked with us would be really proud,'" said teacher Stacey Helbig.

"I want my kids to grow up knowing that I have done something. That I didn't just sit by and complain that, 'Oh gosh the world is falling apart and isn't that sad.' I really want to say that I've done my best to try to make the world a better place in a little tiny way," Sherwood said.
