CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- He is called the Reading Reveler. And you might be too if you spent years donating books.Harvey Ancel is 93 years old. He enjoys reading so much he works year-round finding new or gently used children's books to donate to area schools."It is really nice of him because not everyone does this," said fifth- grader Cece Daniel.
"I think he is really great because he is helping students learn and get a better education and learn more vocabulary," said fifth-grader Nathan Waanders. As Ancel put it, "Perhaps this will ignite a spark of interest and the youngster will start reading."One of his favorite schools to donate to is Lois Lenski Elementary in Centennial. Lenski was a famous children's author and illustrator. So it is fitting that a school that bears her name is given thousands of books by Ancel."The arts: reading, music, and literature, they celebrate life, and they give us our measure," said Ancel.Ancel's kindness also speaks volumes. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met," said Waanders."Students have benefited from his sharing, his joy of reading great literature and finding great words while reading," said Principal Dr. Barbara DeSpain.Ancel has donated books to mostly Littleton Public Schools for 15 years. He figures he has given more than 100,000 books."The pleasure I got out of reading I am giving to these youngsters," said Ancel.
