Volunteer Makes 'Every Child Count'

New Parents Given Everything They Need To Bring Baby Home

It may be hard to imagine a newborn coming home for the first time with little more than the diaper and a blanket they are wearing, but it can happen. 7Everyday Hero Nina Minnehan makes sure newborns and their moms have hope.

Minnehan founded a nonprofit three years ago called Every Child Counts. The group donates layettes at area clinics.

"A layette is a homemade bag that can serve as a diaper bag. We have diapers and wipes, baby wash, wash clothes, sleepers, jackets, blankets, and toys," said Minnehan.

When Minnehan adopted her daughter from Guatemala, she was exposed to the poverty that often faces children.

"It really opened my eyes to the state of affairs for kids in general," said Minnehan.

Today, Minnehan locates moms in need at clinics like the Metro Community Provider Network, which serves people having trouble accessing health care.

"So, it could be issues of health insurance, it could be issues of disability, it could be that other sectors of health care don't work for them," said David Myers, president and CEO of Metro Community Provider Network.

"Everybody meets rough times and I think it is our responsibility to help. If we have something to give, we need to give it to those who do not have it," said Minnehan.

"She is just an amazing lady. She has a heart for children and a heart for people who need things," said Virginia Moore, an Every Child Counts volunteer.
