LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Field Day is one of the most popular events at any school. This week's 7Everyday Hero makes sure everyone gets a chance to compete and have fun.Mary Carpenter organized the first Tournament of Champions in 1979. Back then it had just 25 competitors.Today, there are 275 participants. It is a sports and game day for children with disabilities across greater Denver. The Gold Crown Foundation provides the space in Jefferson County. Parents and other volunteers provide the support. And the kids have a ball.
"I like it because I got a first place," said Daniel, 7 years old."Anytime he gets to run around and play and be a typical kid, he loves it," said Regina Lane, Daniel's mom.Nine year old Katy showed off her winning ribbon too."She could not wait to come to this. And she just loves to be apart of it. Just to keep her moving is very important to us too,“ said Jennifer Leasure, Katy's mom.Schools everywhere have field days like this, but they are not always adapted for kids with physical challenges."This is something that gets kids moving and trying out. And they also come and see other kids doing things in wheelchairs and go home and try things," said Carpenter. After a career as a physical therapist, Carpenter was intent on providing activities for kids with disabilities."I like to see kids move and not sit," said Carpenter. She also volunteers for the annual Colorado Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp in Aurora. And you can always find Carpenter helping with the National Sports Center for the Disabled ski program in Winter Park."She just makes sure everyone is taken care of before she even goes and sits down," said fellow volunteer Tara Jamison. In other words, Mary Carpenter never stops giving."She essentially gives her life to make sure these kids have a great time," said Lane."Mary Carpenter is wonderful. She is so organized. She brings all these kids together every year," said Leasure. And Mary Carpenter said she has no plans to retire anytime soon.
