BOULDER, Colo. -- Without donations of food thousands of Colorado's elderly could not make it. In the Boulder-Broomfield area alone some 500 seniors rely on food banks, and 7Everyday Hero Lynette Sipe."It is just real important that older, low income people get bags of groceries twice a month," said Sipe.Sipe coordinates a food delivery program called Elder Share in Lafayette. It uses volunteers to deliver sacks of food to seniors. Twice a month they deliver a week's worth of food.
"I appreciate having the elder in this community," said Sipe.Elder Share is a service of Community Food Share, which is the food bank for Boulder and Broomfield counties. Its goals are to fight hunger and make the most out of donations."For every dollar you donate to us, I can provide four meals to the community," said Michael StaffordCrane, Community Food Share Director.Community Food Share can do that because of volunteers like Sipe."Lynette has been with us for well over 10 years. That is more than half the time we have been running Elder Share," said StaffordCrane."If someone cannot come and get it (the food) and we do not have drivers, she says: 'Stay here and take care of it. I am going to run and deliver,'" said volunteer Pancha DeHerrera.Sipe said she gives her time just for the joy of giving. Many agencies are happy she feels that way. Sipe gives her time each month to Elder Share, the Lyons Club, Meals on Wheels, and the veteran’s hospital.
