Heroes Brighten Young Patients' Lives With Music

Music can connect people, and in the case of two 7Everyday Heroes, it can change lives. John Catt of Granby and Colin Connors of Denver met in 2005 at a camp for kids with cancer.

"He (Catt) asked me if I would play guitar if he got me one, and I said: 'Of course!' And he surprised me a couple weeks later with a guitar," said Connors.

At that time, Connors was battling an inoperable brain tumor.

"It was nice. It was something to keep my mind off being sick," said Connors.

That gave Catt an idea. He was already apart of the Grand County Blues Society that inspires young musicians. Giving that first guitar to Connors started a non-profit that provides free musical instruments to kids facing life threatening diseases and medical struggles. It is called the Blue Star Connection.

"Blue for the music, star because these kids are stars, and connection because we're connecting them to music," said Catt.

Connors finds fellow kids and teenagers facing medical hurdles and Catt locates new musical instruments. Together they use the network of more than 200 Guitar Center stores nationwide so they can reach beyond Colorado.

"We have had drums, flutes, saxophones, and keyboards," said Connors.

"The only thing we have ever asked is: Send us a picture with you smiling. That is all we ask," adds Catt.

In five years time, Catt and Connors and the Blue Star Connection have put musical instruments in the hands of more than 50 kids. Matthew Martinez is the latest recipient. He got a new black electric guitar.

"I think it is really cool that they are giving guitars to people who need something positive," said Martinez.

The Blue Star Connection has served kids in 23 states and as far away as India. It relies on donations and the goodwill of others, but also hours of hard volunteer work by Catt and Connors.

"I enjoyed getting the guitar and I enjoyed playing it. So, why not others?" said Connors.

"I do not think about how much work, I think about how much success," said Catt
