Bringing Christmas To Everyone At Warren Village

Many of us buy food and gifts during the holidays for families in need. But imagine supplying gifts for an entire apartment complex. It happens every Christmas at Denver's Warren Village.

"We serve low-income single parents and their children. And the great thing about Warren Village is it is a holistic approach to self-sufficiency," said Sue Mohrman, Warren Village president and CEO.

Early on along the road to becoming independent, families at Warren Village just cannot afford Christmas gifts for their children. So, each year Jay Longmire comes to the rescue. He gathers family, friends, and co-workers to buy gifts for all the kids at Warren Village.

"One of the main sponsors is REMAX Professionals, there is Pinnacle Mortgage; 1st Bank helps, too," said Longmire, a REMAX Broker himself.

Longmire makes sure each child gets two gifts. This year there are 167 children. As Longmire put it, "We try to get a practical gift and a fun gift and if they both happen to be fun, that is probably OK."

This Christmas marks Longmire’s 21st year for the project.

"For about the first 12 to 14 years I did all six floors (at Warren Village) by myself and it was a load," said Longmire.

These days Longmire has dozens of fellow volunteers who help distribute the presents. They stack gifts outside each door while the families wait patiently inside their apartments. Then Santa himself knocks on the door and presents the gifts to the children. It is a sight that is as much fun for the parents as it is the kids.

"You have this guy, this Santa Claus, and you open your door and there is this big bag sitting next to your door. And you see the smiles on your kids' faces. It is exciting and fun," said Lauren Hawkins, a Warren Village resident.

"You just have to see that once or twice and you go: 'You know what? I am going to be here next year,'" said Longmire.

"He is such a giver. He is like clockwork. He comes the second Tuesday of December. And it doesn't do it for any accolades or attention, he just does it because he believes in the program and he believes in our families, and he is so good to our children," said Mohrman.

Jay Longmire is the perfect Christmas 7Everyday Hero.
