Volunteer Drums Up Support For Families
Denver's East High School drum line follows the beat of a special volunteer. She is not a teacher, and her son has already graduated, but she helps lead drum practice every week. Her name is Jocelyn Miller."She does everything for us," said East High senior Jamal McIntosh."She has been the backbone of our drum line," said Charlie Koyle, a graduate of East High.
When the students wanted something to do after school and thought of forming a drum line, they immediately turned to Miller. Many people in Denver know her as someone who has a heart for young people and their families. As McIntosh puts it, "It makes me think somebody actually cares about us, that we are just not there alone.""We talk about it a lot. She is like my mom away from home. She is our mother and she would do anything for us," said Koyl.Jocelyn also stays busy drumming up support for families. In 2005, she established a family education center named after her late father, Robert A. Miller. The center offers parenting classes that are open to anyone in the community."There are no reservations when it comes Jocelyn helping someone else. She just does it," said Ty Johnson, a fellow child care professional.Jocelyn is constantly encouraging parents young and old."Everything they do is an example for their children. So, if you give up what are you teaching your children?," said Miller.Jocelyn Miller is the voice of compassion and hope for hundreds of families across Denver. For more infomation about the Robert A.
