Volunteer Gives State Capitol Tours
Thousands of Coloradans who drive by the state Capitol are familiar with the building's gold dome. But most people probably do not know much about the rest of the exterior.Fourth graders taking Colorado History class could quickly tell you that it is gray granite from Gunnison, Colorado.
The students are informed, thanks in part, to 7Everyday Hero Carol Keller.Carol has been a capitol tour guide since 1985. She loves everything about her volunteer work. "The people; the building, it just gets under your skin," said Carol. She admits she does not keep up with all the politics at the capitol, but when it comes to the history of this building, you could call her "Speaker of the House.""The kids love her, the adults love her, guests from around the world love her as a tour guide," said Edna Pelzmann, Visitor Services Manager.Among the 48,000 people who tour the capitol each year are fourth graders studying Colorado history, and most of them love to hear Carol's stories about the capitol building."I think it is cool and awesome," said Hannah, a fourth-grader from Larkspur Elementary. Her classmate, Shawn, added: "I think it is awesome."Carol Keller volunteers every Friday. In May 2010, she will celebrate 25 years as a volunteer capitol tour guide.
