Homemade Bags Go 'From 1 Breast Cancer Survivor To Another'
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but a group of women in Boulder take up the cause year round.Their sewing machines help tell of their commitment to cancer patients. The machines bear the names Hope, Love and Peace.Linda Boden and Gloria Frender are breast cancer survivors. "We have just all been touched or have had all different all kinds of cancer," said Frender, a member of the group.
Boden added, "We're here to tell everybody that you can make it."The two women met during cancer treatment and realized they both had a flare for sewing. They started the nonprofit Breast Cancer Survivors and Friends. The group meets once a month to sew donated material scraps into cosmetic bags for others facing cancer. "I think you're really at your best when you're helping someone else out,” said Frender. Each set of bags comes with a handwritten note that reads: "Warm wishes from one breast cancer survivor to another."The whole idea is assure cancer patients they are not alone. As Frender and Boden like to say, "Cancer is a word, not a sentence."Since 2000 Breast Cancer Survivors and Friends has given away 2,900 sets of two bags to cancer patients. But the real gift may be the feeling this act of kindness brings to everyone involved."Money doesn't buy that; it is just in your heart. It's just such a good feeling that someone else is going to be touched by that," said Boden.
