FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- There's something exciting going on in Fort Collins that is catching on across Colorado. You can't necessarily see it, hear it, or even touch it, but its changing lives. It is an initiative called Character Fort Collins, which was started by retired businessman Bob Powell.
"Probably the most vital characteristic that leads to potential is character," said Powell. After 40 years in the business world, Powell saw first hand that most challenges in life were character related issues. So he started the nonprofit Character Fort Collins in 2001."When I made this change I feel like I really crossed that threshold from success to significance," said Powell. The initiative provides resources to help anyone model good character.Every Thursday is Community Character Day in Fort Collins. It is a time when business owners, students, teachers, coaches, even church leaders, commit to taking the journey toward good character. They start with themselves.Powell feels character is the one trait that can result in more harmonious relationships, improved morale, increased productivity and a reduction in stress. And several Colorado communities seem to agree. Many of them are now trying to mirror Powell's efforts in Fort Collins."He is a teacher and he is a mentor, and he is very courageous because this is an uncomfortable conversation for a lot of people," said Character Fort Collins Executive Director Becky Dixon.Bob Powell is a 7Everyday Hero making a difference, one person at a time."I said to myself, 'Even if it helps just one person, it's going to be worth it,'" said Powell.
