This week's 7Everyday Hero has been a cop for 35 years. And he has never been paid for it.Dale Sherratt is a reserve officer for the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. Reserve officers have all the training and authorities of deputies, they just don't get paid - even when it means putting themselves in harm's way."If I walk up to this door, am I going to meet a guy with 50 guns and he comes out the door with guns blazing? But that's something you have to work out in your mind ahead of time," said Sherratt.
The Sheriff's Office estimates Sheratt puts in between 500 and 700 hours of service each year. He has been volunteering for 35 years, working a full-time job at Xcel Energy at the same time.Sherratt said major events like the January wildfires in Boulder give him the most satisfaction: "I think over the years that's the thing I've gotten the most gratification out of - being able to help people out in those types of disasters."
