Search and rescue teams help save lives year-round in Colorado. They're made up of highly motivated, dedicated volunteers. This week's 7Everyday Hero leads a rescue team that is one of kind. The Arapahoe Rescue Patrol is the only search and rescue team in the nation that's composed entirely of high school students. And they have made a reputation for themselves. It enjoys a 99% find rate on search and rescues."Most other organizations around the state realize that Arapahoe Rescue can perform all the same duties that they can do, many times better," said Patrol Chief Justin Kanaber. Kanaber volunteered for the team as a teenager. Today he leads the group in addition to holding down a full time job.
"He works in downtown Denver and he lives in Castle Rock, so he has to drive there everyday. He misses work, which is great with the economy and everything," said Teen Captain Jake Gunn.Arapahoe Rescue's primary mission is to search for lost people, give them aid if needed, and bring them to safety. The team's work often goes beyond Arapahoe County."We respond on major structure fires, motor vehicle accidents in addition to our regular search and rescue duties," said Kanaber. Each year there are about 30 teenaged members of the team. The teens typically earn three to four thousand volunteer hours while on the team.Of course, as they graduate Kanaber has to recruit and train new members. It's a lot of work, but Kanaber loves it."He just loves helping people and helps us. I mean it can be a struggle working with 30 teenagers," said Gunn.
