A 7-year-old girl who was reportedly kidnapped by her own mother early Wednesday has been found safe, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

America Arellano, who was the focus of a statewide AMBER alert, was found by Aurora Police Department officers at around 7:22 p.m. in the area of South Havana Street and East Idaho Place.

Her mother, Wendy Arellano, 25, who police said had lost her parental rights to care for the child, was arrested for second-degree kidnapping.

Arellano was found safe inside an apartment and officers are now trying to arrange for her return to her foster family, an official with the CSPD said in a statement. The AMBER alert is also canceled.

But detectives are still interested in finding Heriberto Gonzalez-Hernandez, a second person of interest in this case, as well as the suspect vehicle, a gray Dodge Avenger with Colorado Plates DQH-4321.

Police said Gonzalez-Hernandez is not a suspect in the kidnapping, they simply want to talk to him about the case.

Arellano was taken from Carver Elementary School in Colorado Springs at about 8:15 a.m. The case is now being investigated as a possible parental kidnapping.

Ms. Arellano allegedly entered Carver Elementary and found her daughter, America, in a school hallway and left with her along with Gonzalez going in an unknown direction, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Police believed Ms. Arellano was seeking to take America across state lines.

This is an active investigation. If anyone has information or is a witness to the incident you can contact the department at (719) 444-7000 or if you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at (719) 634-STOP (7867).
